In the interest of your safety and according to mining legal regulations viewing the underground Barbarossa Cave is only permitted as part of a tour. (Directive of the Thuringia Superior Mining Authority for the Operation of Show Mines and Show Caves - Thuringia Government Gazette Nr.34/1997.)

The tours normally begin on the hour, but may take place more regularly depending on the amount of visitors.
Tour groups of 15 people or more are asked to register in advance.

Tours for a maximum of 80 people are permitted and can be accommodated without problem. On national holidays and during holiday periods demand can be so high that you may have to wait a short while for your tour to begin. This is a rare occurrence, but we do like to ensure that the individuality and quality of each tour is not compromised.

The tour takes about 50 to 60 minutes and covers a distance of about 800 metres. The tour route is almost completely flat and made of reinforced mined stone. In the exit area however, there are 58 steps to climb up that cover a height-difference of 20 metres. Due to their natural condition the paths are sometimes very uneven and very slippery, but water doesn’t seep into the cave, and despite a high air humidity of 96% the interior is overall pleasantly dry.

Please Note:

  • Due to the above-mentioned natural conditions the various areas of the cave are not fully accessible to everyone.
  • We are more than happy to arrange shorter tours for wheelchair users, but please be aware that advance booking is essential.
  • We apologise for any inconvenience, but according to the above-mentioned Thuringia Superior Mining Authority directive, animals cannot be taken into to the cave with you.
  • There is a constant temperature of 9° C in the caves. Please ensure you have appropriate clothing with you, especially during the summer.
  • Please take note of the mining authority visitor rules on display.
